Librarians are often known for selecting and curating books, but sometimes they write them as well. Two of Harvard Law School Library’s own librarians have recently joined the ranks of published writers, adding “author” to their professional achievements.
Nongji Zhang, Legal Scholars and Scholarship in the People’s Republic of China: The First Generation, 1949–1992
In Legal Scholars and Scholarship in the People’s Republic of China: The First Generation, 1949-1992, our Librarian for East Asian Law, Nongji Zhang, offers an in-depth look at the early development of legal scholarship in the People’s Republic of China, highlighting the first generation of scholars who built a new legal system after the Chinese Revolution in 1949. By tracing their lives, ideas, and key writings, this important work shows how these pioneers shaped modern Chinese legal thought and legal studies amid major political and social change. It serves as a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand the evolution of Chinese law and its academic tradition.
Yasmin Morais, Legal Research Methods for the English-Speaking Caribbean
Legal Research Methods for the English-Speaking Caribbean is written by our Foreign, Comparative, and International Collection Development Librarian, Yasmin Morais, and her co-author, Yemisi Dina. The book guides readers through finding and using legal information across Caribbean nations that share a British colonial past. It explains how to access key sources, such as statutes, case law, and secondary material, many of which remain in print. Their award-winning book also surveys the region’s courts, laws, and emerging legal fields like cannabis regulation, climate change, and cryptocurrency, making it a vital tool for students, scholars, and policymakers studying Caribbean or comparative law.
Together, these works reflect the depth of expertise and scholarly engagement within the Harvard Law School Library, reminding us that librarians don’t just preserve knowledge, they create it.
