About HLSOrgs

HLSOrgs is a platform for hosting HLS student organization websites. It runs on WordPress, a system that makes it easy to edit and customize your site. This version of WordPress uses the block editor. If you have WordPress experience but not with the block editor, you’ll likely want to review some of the training below.

For design, HLSOrgs websites have the Astra theme, which allows you to customize your header, color scheme, fonts, and overall look of your site.

Trainings and Resources

WordPress

The LinkedIn Learning course WordPress Essential Training provides an excellent video tutorial on how to use WordPress. You can access your Harvard LinkedIn Learning account here. If you have questions or need help setting up or editing your student organization website, please reach out to dosceeb@law.harvard.edu.

Additionally, these resources can help you get up to speed using WordPress and the block editor, specifically.

Astra and Design

Astra, aka the Customizer, gives you many options to customize your heading and the overall look and feel of your site.

Accessibility

All HLS student organization websites must be in accordance with Harvard’s Digital Accessibility Policy.

Harvard’s Digital Accessibility Services team hosts a wide range of both live and self-guided training and support, as well as office hours every other Thursday to help troubleshoot any problems.

You can check the accessibility of your site using the Wave Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool. There are many accessibility assessment tools available, so feel free to use multiple, as well as conduct manual testing with your keyboard and a screen reader.

The most common accessibility issues we see are skipped heading levels, missing alt text, and low color contrast. Here are some resources to help with these issues:
