Thank you for your interest in proctoring at Harvard Law School! We have three distinct exam periods over the academic year during which the Registrar’s Office administers many in-class exams that require proctors.

Proctor Roles & Responsibilities

Assistant Proctor: Responsible for monitoring students in a large exam classroom to ensure compliance with exam procedures and rules.  Will also execute any tasks assigned to them by the Proctor-In-Charge (i.e. monitoring our sign-in sheet, checking IDs, etc.), and for escorting students to a different location should they need to leave the exam room (i.e. Health Services, Computer Lab, Registrar’s Office).

Accommodations Proctor: Responsible for monitoring one to ten students in a small testing environment to ensure compliance with exam procedures and rules. Will be responsible for administering the exam with specific instructions relevant to the accommodations of the student(s) in the room. Typically, the proctor will need to keep track of the student’s start and end times, keep track of approved breaks when applicable, and adjust times as necessary.

Technical Proctor: Responsible for assisting students with exam software issues and helping as needed in the classroom as determined by the Head Proctor. Technical proctors must have proficient knowledge of computers, and operating software. Exam software knowledge is highly preferable, but not required.

Proctor-in-Charge: As assigned by the Head Proctor. Responsible for the overall administration of the large exam classroom, gives all announcements to students ,assigns tasks to assistant proctors, completes all necessary paperwork, takes detailed notes on exam room occurrences, and speaks directly with students if any problems arise during the exam.

Schedule

  • HLS exams are scheduled Mondays to Fridays. Morning exams start at 9am, and afternoon exams start at 2pm. Proctors are expected to arrive one hour before these start times to receive their assignments and check in with the head proctors on duty at the end of their assigned exam before leaving campus or assisting with another exam.  
  • Most main room exams are 3 hours, although there may be a small number of exams either shorter or longer. Main room exams are never longer than 4 hours.  
  • In class exams for students with accommodations have a greater variety of lengths. The extended schedules listed below reflects an estimated coverage window in which proctors are needed for these exams.  
  • Exam Proctor Shifts:
    • Morning : 8am-12:30pm
    • Morning Extended: 8am-3pm
    • Afternoon: 1pm-5:30pm
    • Afternoon Extended: 1pm-8pm

Hourly Rate

Our starting rate for proctors is $22/hour. Paid training is provided before the Fall and Spring exam periods.

We are a close 10-minute walk from the Harvard Square T-stop (Red Line) and Massachusetts Avenue is serviced by the #1, #77, and #96 bus lines.  There is parking available below Wasserstein Hall, but please note, parking passes must be purchased online in advance.

Exams are held in multiple buildings across the Harvard Law School campus.
