The Program
The United States Embassy in Luxembourg is accepting applications for the Dean Acheson Legal Scholar Program at the Court of Justice of the European Union for fall 2025 and spring 2026. Placements are available with a Judge of the Court of Justice, an Advocate General of the Court of Justice, or a Judge of the General Court. These 90-day, unpaid internships are open to American citizens and legal permanent residents of the United States who have completed three years of law school and possess a strong knowledge of European Union Law. French language skills are desirable, as well as other EU language skills. This information sheet from the embassy (PDF) provides more details about the program.
Prospective Dean Acheson Legal Scholars are also invited to apply to the University of Luxembourg’s Master in European Union Law and Litigation program. Through this program they can combine their experience at the ECJ with an academic degree program. More information available here.
How to Apply
HLS can nominate up to three applicants for the 2025-2026 program. Applications for both the Legal Scholar program periods are due to the Embassy by April 25, 2025, and require a letter of nomination from HLS. As a first step, students who are interested in applying should submit a CV or resume, an unofficial copy of their HLS transcript, and an email describing their interest in the program to International Legal Studies at ils@law.harvard.edu no later than Friday, April 11, 2025. Nominated students will be asked to provide additional materials, including a completed application form (which ILS will provide) and official undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
