Vision & Justice with Professor Sarah Lewis
April 8, 2026
12:20 pm - 1:15 pm
WCC 1010
Join us for a conversation with Sarah Lewis on Vision and Justice, exploring how visual culture shapes law, citizenship, and democracy.
Professor Lewis, cultural historian and founder of the Vision & Justice initiative, will discuss how images have historically determined who is seen, recognized, and protected under the law.
The conversation will also examine the increasing reliance on photographic and video evidence in civil rights litigation, and how racial bias embedded in visual technologies complicates assumptions of objectivity. Professor Lewis will discuss how artists critique legal regimes such as Stand Your Ground laws, and reflect on her recent book, The Unseen Truth, which explores how courts have helped construct racialized visual categories of citizenship.
This event offers a unique opportunity to engage with a leading voice at the intersection of art, race, and law.
Lunch will be provided! Please RSVP for this event and HALO’s additional Art Week Symposium events here.
