Respectfully, No: Guns, Gender, and Dissenting on the Ninth Circuit – A Conversation with Judge Lawrence VanDyke (9th Cir.)

October 16, 2026

12:15 pm - 1:20 pm

Langdell Hall; 225 Vorenberg Classroom - North

Join the Federalist Society for a conversation with Judge Lawrence VanDyke of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, whose sharp dissents, colorful prose, and willingness to challenge his colleagues have made him one of the court’s most distinctive voices. From Second Amendment challenges to disputes over gender identity and constitutional rights, Judge VanDyke has written forceful opinions questioning his court’s approach to some of the most contentious issues in modern constitutional law. A Harvard Law School alumnus and former Solicitor General of both Nevada and Montana, Judge VanDyke returns to Cambridge to discuss the constitutional principles behind his dissents, the art of judicial disagreement, and what happens when a judge thinks the majority has gotten it spectacularly wrong. Lunch will be served.
