Presidential Powers in the Constitution

Prerequisite: None

Exam Type: No Exam

From the founding, the President’s authorities and obligations have been delineated in Article II of the Constitution, but they have been developed and defined as well through executive practices and judicial explications. Taking the specific language of the Constitution as the starting point of discussion, this reading group will survey six of those authorities and obligations: the Commander in Chief role, the foreign relations role, the litigation role, the hiring and firing role, the “take care” execution role, and the interaction with Congress role.

Note: This reading group will meet on the following dates: 2/4, 2/18, 3/4, 3/25, 4/8, and 4/22.
