Fall-Spring 2026 Course

Colonial Law in Time(s) and Space(s)

Prerequisites: None

Exam Type: No Exam

This course will examine the relationship between law and colonialism in Latin America, Africa, and Asia during both the early modern and the modern period. By reading some of the seminal works that have been published on the issue we will seek to understand how law both facilitated and limited colonialism and how colonialism, in turn, had modified the legal systems that had existed previously. Attention will also be given to law as a political, religious, social, and economic agent and to the legal arena as a sphere for conflict resolution, negotiation, and identity formation.

Note: This a full-year, cross-listed course with FAS, listed as Hist 1991A and Hist 1991B. This course will meet at FAS and adhere to the FAS academic calendar.

This course will meet every other week over the fall and spring terms on Mondays from 3:00-5:45pm.
