Advanced Problems in Sex Equality

Prerequisite: Taking the course, Sex Equality, previously or concurrently is helpful but not required.

Creative problem-solving on wide ranging issues of sex and gender inequality — including relevant intersections with race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and age, for example — is the focus of this seminar. Basic legal and philosophical approaches to equality are considered in depth for their potential practical and strategic application to selected challenging, contested, often so far intractable, questions of pay equity, family, sexual violation, reproductive justice, transgender status, prostitution, and pornography. among others. Legislative, litigation, administrative, and policy solutions, as well as analytic critiques of existing approaches, are considered. Emphasis is placed on developing new arguments and cutting-edge tools to effectively move the needle on these and other crucial issues in this domain.
