Abstract: The author believes that the U.S. policy of introducing democracy to the Middle East opened the door to the legitimate election of entitles, such as Hezbollah and Hamas. The balanced powers of the Cold War era are gone, to be replaced by democratically legitimized militias that go to war with powerful states. Democracy in the region is no longer an end in itself.
