Learning is a life-long process. As such, the Emerging Leaders program recognizes that EL’s role in leadership development doesn’t end at graduation. We seek to support our alumni over the course of their careers by continuing to provide professional development and networking opportunities. The most successful alumni initiatives are a result of a collaborative process between the Emerging Leaders Advisory Board (ELAB) and a driven alumnus, so all EL alumni are encouraged to reach out to the ELAB with any and all ideas for alumni development.

Alumni Spotlight

Amanda McMahan (2014-2015)

What made you apply to the Emerging Leaders @ HLS program?

I was told about the program by a fellow HLS colleague and knew it would be a great program to be a part of – I was not disappointed!

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I enjoyed getting to know my fellow HLS colleagues – the people that you talk to on the phone or over email for years but never actually meet face to face. This program gave me the opportunity to get out of my office and actually meet the individuals that help make HLS great – the staff!

How did Emerging Leaders make a difference in your career?

Emerging Leaders gave me the support network that I didn’t know I needed. My cohort encouraged me through my career transitions and offered me fresh insights into professional development.

Are you still in the current role you were in while participating in Emerging Leaders?  If not, what was your role when you were in the program and what are you doing now?

When I participated in EL, I was working in HLS Faculty Support as an Executive Assistant. Since then, I have taken a promotional opportunity within Harvard and am now working as the Executive Assistant to the Dean for Academic Affairs at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

What advice do you have for potential applicants?

Go to as many EL sessions as possible (they’re so valuable!), do the work, and get to know your cohort! And get involved in the larger EL network – there are a lot of talented individuals that have been involved in the program over the years. It’s a great professional network to be a part of!
