Your time is limited, so you may be wondering why you should spend time attending employer events. While you can’t (and don’t need to) attend them all, attending some events is a great way to learn more about EIP employers.

As you know many firms are hosting events for 1Ls this spring. You may not know, however, the purpose of attending. As your first step in EIP preparation, use the events to learn more about the firms, their attorneys, and their work- information that can help you differentiate the firms from one another and be used later in interviews to discuss your interest in a particular firm.

After attending employer events, including last night’s Market Mixer, many students wonder about following up with those they met at the event. After a particularly good or lengthy conversation with an attorney, or if an attorney or recruiter encourages you to follow up, it is entirely appropriate to follow up with an email.

Tomorrow’s EIP Orientation & Market Mixer is an opportunity for you to learn about this summer’s Early Interview Program (EIP) and how best to prepare, as well as meet lawyers from six major legal markets — Boston, Chicago, New York, California, Texas and DC.

Students don’t always appreciate the value of networking and attending employer events, but informational interviews and employer events are great ways to make meaningful and strategic connections with EIP firms that are of interest to you. EIP Orientation & Market Mixer is coming up on Wednesday, February 8 at 5:45pm. EIP Orientation runs from 5:45-6:30pm and the networking reception is from 6:30-8 pm. This program will provide you with the opportunity learn about EIP and meet a number of attorneys from many law firms that participate in EIP.

Starting in a couple weeks, many firms will host receptions and other events for 1Ls. Events may include coffee chats, attorney office hours, local receptions, and virtual chats. Think of these events as your first step in EIP preparation and research.

During your 1L year, employers will host numerous events, including virtual employer chats and in-person reception-style events. You may even choose to attend some over winter break. Starting next semester, the number of these events will increase substantially.

Branding is important, even in the hiring process, and when it comes to the legal profession, there is no better brand than Harvard Law School. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to use that to your advantage.

As you settle into the new school year, it’s time to reconnect with the people you will want to list as references during your upcoming summer job search. Take a few minutes over the next few weeks to draft a short email to them, describing your law school experience so far and checking in with them.
