The HLS Joint Council is one of many Councils located within Schools and administrative departments of Harvard University.  All Councils are overseen by a University-wide Joint Governance Coordinating Committee (JGCC), which was created in the Agreement between the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers (HUCTW) and Harvard University.  The HLS Joint Council aims to provide a forum where union and non-union employees can come together to discuss local workplace issues.

Our purpose statement explains,

“The HLS Joint Council is a cross-section of the HLS staff who, as ambassadors, are responsible for actively soliciting feedback, fostering dialog, promoting collaboration and transparency and resolving issues through advocacy to strengthen the HLS community.”

In addition to holding monthly meetings to discuss various HLS-related topics, the Joint Council is also known by many of the staff through its organizing and hosting of various community awareness/community building events in recent years such as:

  • The Annual Ice Cream Social (and volleyball tournament)
  • HLS Staff Thinks Big Too
    • see a couple previous years’ videos (2013, 2014)
  • Diversity in the Workplace Speaker Series
  • Faculty Brownbags
  • Wellness Workshops
  • And other ad hoc Brownbags for staff (retirement planning, protecting yourself online, etc.)
