OPIA’s Virtual Public Interest Interview Program (V-PIIP) offers 3L students seeking post-graduate employment an opportunity to interview with nonprofit organizations, public defenders and prosecutors’ offices, legal services organizations, government agencies, and private public interest law firms. The virtual nature of this year’s program will facilitate the participation of employers from a wider range of locations than in previous years. If you were not able to attend the V-PIIP orientation, please watch the video. As you continue to prepare for the V-PIIP program, you should also consider the following:

  • 3L Job Search Timeline: OPIA’s entry level job search timeline provides an overarching structure to your entry level public interest job search. You will need to adjust the timeline to take into account the hiring practices of the types of organizations you are targeting. Although the vast majority of public interest employers will not begin to consider applications for post-graduate employment until the fall, be sure to read OPIA’s weekly emails for alerts regarding with employers with early deadlines.
  • V-PIIP Bidding: As we discussed in our V-PIIP orientation webinar, V-PIIP is an important piece of your entry level job search. Students who are most successful in their job searches are those who are flexible about their first job and cast a wide net, both geographically and substantively, in their applications. This inclusive approach to the job hunt is even more critical as employers cope with the economic impacts of the pandemic.Below you’ll find a list of employers who have indicated that they are in a position to hire this year, and are interested in seeing applications from HLS students. We strongly encourage 3Ls to peruse this list carefully and bid broadly, with an eye on both dream jobs and strong stepping-stone positions. That said, you should not bid on an employer from whom you would not consider accepting an offer. You may find comprehensive information on participating employers in Symplicity CSM. Follow the step-by-step guide to V-PIIP bidding.
  • Remote Interviewing: All interviews scheduled through V-PIIP will be conducted remotely. Please pay special attention to resources that can assist you during the remote interviews. As you would for an in-person interview, you should learn about the employer and the position and prepare questions in advance using OPIA’s interviewing resources. You can make a one-page “cheat sheet” to glance at during the interview, but it should not be anything you have to open or move so it does not become a distraction, and you should not read prepared answers from it.A mock interview with an OPIA advisor can help you further prepare for the real thing. Make an appointment to practice your interviewing skills and get real time feedback. When you sign up for an appointment, be sure to indicate the type of job you are interviewing for so that we can tailor our questions accordingly.

As always, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with an OPIA advisor. We are available to help you brainstorm job search strategies, review the list of V-PIIP employers, or conduct a mock interview.
