We at the Bernard Koteen Office of Public Interest Advising (OPIA) are excited to welcome you to Harvard Law School and our vibrant public interest community. OPIA, the first office of its kind at any law school, advises students about public service options and how to pursue them. We strive to build a public service community at Harvard Law School with a welcoming staff that enjoys working with students and is committed to providing advice, encouragement and support to expand your knowledge of public service opportunities here at HLS and beyond.

During your first year at Harvard, there are many ways to become involved with public interest law. In particular, we invite you to join OPIA’s Public Service Leaders Program. As a 1L participant, you will have the opportunity to connect with other public interest oriented students, participate in unique public interest programming, and receive mentoring from an alumni mentor and upperclass students. As a program graduate, you will be a vital part of fostering and supporting the public interest community at HLS for future generations of law students.

Public Service Leaders Program Highlights

As a 1L Public Service Leader, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend a monthly lunch series with public interest-minded 2Ls and 3Ls about a wide range of topics related to law school and public interest;
  • Connect with public interest-minded 2Ls and 3Ls;
  • Be matched with an alumni mentor who has similar career interests as you; and

As a future 2L/ 3L, we ask that you participate in the program as mentors and advisors to both 1Ls and OPIA. The commitments are minimal and reflect activities in which public interest oriented students already participate during their time at HLS.

The Public Interest Leaders Program is intended to provide support and community for all students with a strong belief in public service, whether or not you ultimately decide to work in the public sector upon graduation. We encourage all interested students to join.

To sign up, please complete the intake form.  The deadline to sign up is September 8th at 11:59 pm.

Please mark your calendars for a mandatory initial meeting on September 9th time and location TBD.
