Checklist for incoming 1L J.D. Students:

Check your HLS email account regularly for important information from HLS departments and community members.

  • Apply for financial aid.
  • July 1 – Provide official final transcript(s) to the Admissions Office.
  • July 1- Provide all college certifications to the Admissions Office.
  • July 4 – Register to vote.
  • July 25 – Your First  Student Account Notice  will be sent and this is also the first day you can sign up within your student account in order to receive cash advances via direct deposit.
  • July 29 – Deadline to declare your time zone for the fall. The Registrar will release the time zone declaration form on July 27.
  • Early August – You will receive your 1L section information during the week of August 3, followed by further information about ordering assigned textbooks. You will also receive an email with instructions for logging into HELIOS, our student web interface, to update your contact and emergency information.
  • August 5 – Cutoff deadline for having any student loan application for which you have applied be listed on your next student account notice (August 10) and included in the calculation of any early books and supplies allowance cash advance (if eligible).
  • August 5 – Any student with accommodation needs who has not yet contacted Student Support should schedule a meeting with the Accessibility Services team so any accommodation is in place before classes start.
  • August 10 – Your second and final student account notice for fall registration as well as the deadline to have direct deposit set up within your student account in order to receive an early books and supplies advance (if eligible).
  • August 12 – Update your MessageMe profile.
  • Mid-August – Review and complete “Supporting a Harassment-Free Community: What Every Student Needs to Know about Harvard’s Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment Policy.” Link will be sent to your HLS email account.
  • August 13 – The books and supplies allowance early cash advance will be released to you, if you are eligible and have setup direct deposit. *Note: We are releasing the entire academic year amount ($1375) for books and supplies included in your student budget, not just the fall semester portion.
  • August 15 – Last day to pay your term bill either via payment or financial aid.
  • August 21 – Upload your photo to the Harvard University ID services website.
  • August 24 – Deadline to have any student loan application for which you have applied be included in the calculation of your fall semester cash advance.
  • August 24 – Deadline to have direct deposit set up within your student account in order to receive a fall semester cash advance directly to your bank account. If you do not set up direct deposit your advance will be mailed to the local address you have on file with the HLS Registrar. International students who do not yet have a US bank should contact SFS for guidance.
  • August 27 – Formal Orientation programming begins. Orientation is mandatory. Details will arrive early August.
  • August 27 – Date you receive your fall semester cash advance (if qualified).
  • September 2 – First day of 1L classes.
  • September 30 – Deadline for waiving any health insurance plan you do not need/want. *Please note, ACTION IS REQUIRED at the University Health Services site. Visit SFS online for additional information on the financial aid policy regarding waived health insurance.
