Associate Director, East Asian Legal Studies Program
Lecturer on Law
Alonzo Emery is the Associate Director of East Asian Legal Studies and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School. Drawing on nearly a decade of experience living and working in Asia, he teaches and designs programs linking Harvard Law School to institutions and individuals in East Asia. Beginning in 2013, Alonzo worked with Professor William Alford to create and teach the upper-level course now entitled Engaging China. Through the course’s weekly video conferences, Harvard students in Cambridge connect with students in Beijing to explore some of the most complex issues attending the U.S.-China relationship.
From 2013 to 2016, Alonzo served as a Clinical Instructor in the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program where he managed clinical teams working on a variety of dispute systems design, consensus building, mediation, and facilitation projects. During this time he taught the clinic’s requisite seminar and also taught in Harvard Law School’s flagship Negotiation Workshop. Before coming to HLS, Alonzo was an Assistant Professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Renmin University of China Law School in Beijing, where he managed an array of academic programs and taught courses on negotiation as well as international and U.S. law.
Through his clinical and consulting practice, Alonzo has worked with hundreds of corporate executives, civil society leaders, government officials, jurists and educators from around the world in developing negotiation and conflict management strategies. He has led projects and workshops for Hewlett Packard, the Asian Development Bank, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Relations Service, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and JSW Law School in the Kingdom of Bhutan, amongst many others. As a fellow at the Harvard Law School Project on Disability, Alonzo collaborates with colleagues and institutional partners on programs to advance full participation, accessibility and inclusion for all.
Alonzo Emery received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, magna cum laude, and his B.A. from Yale University, cum laude. He has also studied at Peking University, Tsinghua University, Taiwan University and the University of Cape Town. After working for more than a decade to promote transnational dialogue and foster academic inquiry related to China, Alonzo joined the Yale-China Association’s Board of Trustees in 2017. In 2014, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations selected Alonzo to join its Public Intellectuals Program.
