 p><p>Drawing on her experience in legal advocacy and the work of her organi
 zation\, Greene will explore how current policy shifts are impacting fundam
 ental human rights. The event offers an opportunity to reflect on the evolv
 ing landscape of human rights in the U.S. and consider how legal and other 
 advocacy efforts are responding.</p><p>The topics of discussion will includ
 e:</p><ul class="wp-block-list"><li>The state of the freedom of speech\, pr
 otest\, and expression in communities\, academia and the media\;</li><li>Im
 migration enforcement\, its violence\, and its disparate impact on people o
 f color\, regardless of legal status\;</li><li>Trends in the use of the cri
 minal legal system in relation to the free exercise of rights\; and</li><li
 >Threats to democracy and the rule of law.</li></ul><p class="has-h-5-font-
 size"><strong>Speaker</strong></p><p><strong>Tanya Greene</strong> is the D
 irector of the US Program at Human Rights Watch where she leads the organiz
 ation’s team focused on exposing and addressing human rights violations in 
 the United States. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch\, Greene spent five 
 years as the inaugural national ACLU criminal justice Advocacy and Policy C
 ounsel focused on death penalty\, indigent defense\, and juvenile justice p
 olicy reform issues. Greene is an attorney with over 25 years of experience
  in advocacy\, policy reform\, community organizing\, partnerships\, and li
 tigation aimed at challenging and dismantling racist structures and systems
  in the US criminal legal system and beyond.</p><p><strong>Professor Gerald
  L. Neuman (moderator) </strong>is the Director of the School’s Human Right
 s Program\, and the J. Sinclair Armstrong Professor of International\, Fore
 ign\, and Comparative Law at HLS. Neuman teaches courses in international h
 uman rights law\, immigration and nationality law\, and U.S. constitutional
  law. From 2011 to 2014\, he served as a Member of the UN Human Rights Comm
 ittee. Neuman holds a JD from HLS and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institut
 e of Technology.</p>
