 phy. Prof. Mansfield has written on Edmund Burke and the nature of politica
 l parties\, on Machiavelli and the invention of indirect government\, in de
 fense of a defensible liberalism and in favor of a Constitutional American 
 political science. He has also written on executive power and has translate
 d three books of Machiavelli’s and (with the aid of his late wife\, Delba W
 inthrop) Tocqueville's Democracy in America. His book on manliness was publ
 ished by Yale University Press in 2006. He has hardly left Harvard since hi
 s first arrival in 1949 and has been on the faculty since 1962.</p><p>Prof.
  Mansfield will make remarks\, engage in a brief conversation with HLS Lect
 urer Alan Raul\, and take audience questions.</p><p>Lunch talk is sponsored
