HALO will be hosting a lunch talk featuring Hartley Waltman\, the General Counsel of the Americas for Phillips Auction House. Before becoming the General Couns el for Phillips\, Waltman was most recently senior vice president and senio r counsel at Christie’s. Over the course of his tenure\, he served as the p rimary legal counsel and business partner for each of the company’s 25 spec ialist departments. Among his many activities at Christie’s\, he was the le ad counsel for the sale of the Peggy and David Rockefeller Collection. Prio r to this\, he was a partner with Foreht Last Waltman & Katz.
As a leading lawyer in the art law space\ , Waltman will be sharing insights from his practice\, including what he ha s learned during his time representing two major global art auction houses. We will discuss the fascinating 2nd Circuit case\, JN Contemporary Art LLC v. Phillips Auctioneers LLC\, which presented the issue of whe ther COVID-19 should qualify as a force majeure under contract law.
