< p>John Carlin is a partner at Paul\, Weiss where he leads the Investigation s practice\, Cybersecurity & Data Protection practice\, National Security p ractice\, and advises industry-leading organizations on matters involving p rivacy and cybersecurity\, crisis management\, Committee on Foreign Investm ent in the United States\, sanctions and export control\, white collar defe nse and internal investigations. He has served as a top-level official in b oth Republican and Democratic administrations\, including as the Acting Dep uty Attorney General of the United States\, as the top national security of ficial for the U.S. Department of Justice\, as the Chief of Staff of the FB I and as a senior federal prosecutor.
Throughout his career\, John ha s responded to just about every major cyber incident—including the Russian SolarWinds intrusion\, the North Korean cyber-attack on Sony\, the Iranian cyber-attacks on various NYC banks and the Colonial Pipeline ransomware att acks. John is the author of Dawn of the Code War: America’s Battle Agai nst Russia\, China and the Rising Global Cyber Threat.
John was an inaugural Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Scien ce and International Affairs’ Homeland Security Project. John is also the F ounding Chair (now Chair Emeritus and Strategic Advisor) of the Aspen Insti tute’s Cybersecurity and Technology program.
