Skimmed: Breastfeeding, Race, and Injustice – Lunch Talk by Andrea Freeman

November 12, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Professor Andrea Freeman will discuss her new book Skimmed: Breastfeeding, Race, and Injustice. This heartbreaking book tells the story of “The Famous Fultz Quads”—identical black sisters born into a tenant farming family in North Carolina in 1946. Their white doctor sold the rights to use the girls for marketing purposes to the highest-bidding formula company. Over half a century later, baby formula is a seventy-billion-dollar industry and black mothers have the lowest breastfeeding rates in the country. Examining history, marketing, media, popular culture, and law, Skimmed shows how feeding America’s youngest citizens is fraught with legal and social inequalities.
