LIVESTREAMED EVENT: The US Supreme Court meets the European Court of Justice
Friday 2:30 – 4 pm in WCC 2004
US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will have a conversation with European Court of Justice President Koen Lenaerts in Washington – and the conversation will be livestreamed for a Harvard Law School audience on Friday, 21 April from 2:30-4 pm in WCC 2004. The conversation between the justices will identify points of comparison and contrast in the case law of the two courts and will consider the public role of peak court judges in communicating their decision to a wider audience.
The conversation is part of the annual Luxembourg Forum, which takes place each spring in Washington DC. At the Luxembourg Forum, justices of the US Supreme Court meet with visiting justices of the European Court of Justice to hold closed workshops along with expert academics on fields of controversy that engage both courts. The closed workshop ends with an open session that is usually only visible to those physically in Washington. But this year, Justices Breyer and Lenaerts have agreed to stream their conversation for a Harvard Law School audience, given the deep ties of both justices to HLS. Long before they became judges on these important courts, Justices Breyer and Lenaerts first met at HLS and so they were eager to “return,” even if only virtually. They will discuss the results of the day in a conversation moderated by Fernanda Nicola and Bill Davies of the American University, Washington College of Law, where the Luxembourg Forum will be held.
Please join us to see this event, livestreamed especially for HLS.
