With mass atrocities ongoing, do international accountability mechanisms serve as a needed deterrent, or in fact contribute to the intractability of a conflict? Drawing on lessons from past international tribunals, Sarah Leah Whitson (Human Rights Watch), Nicholas Koumjian (Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia), and Prof. Alex Whiting will discuss future accountability mechanisms for grave crimes in Syria and Iraq.
