Please join FiLM Society for a lunchtime conversation at the intersection of law and film with celebrated documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman, whose films have explored a vast array of American institutions. Born in Boston, he attended Yale Law School and taught law before beginning his career in documentary filmmaking. His directorial debut, Titicut Follies, which Wiseman was inspired to make while teaching a course on legal medicine, exposed brutal mistreatment of inmates at Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane and sparked reforms in the treatment of mental illness. Since then, Wiseman has made close to four dozen documentaries chiefly about social institutions such as high schools, local governments, public libraries, and arts establishments. Wiseman has received an American Motion Picture Academy Honorary Award, a Peabody Award and a MacArthur Fellowship. For more information about Wiseman and his films, please visit

HLS students can access a collection of Wiseman’s films on Kanopy: Participants are encouraged to view State Legislature (2007), available at, about the day-to-day workings of the Idaho Legislature, as the moderated discussion may touch on themes from that movie.
