Mark R. Freeman is the Director of the Civil Appellate Staff at the U.S. Department of Justice. The Civil Appellate Staff represents the United States in civil cases in the federal courts of appeals. The office’s portfolio includes many of the most difficult and important appeals in which the federal government is involved. Mr. Freeman has personally argued more than 75 appeals on behalf of the United States, including matters in all thirteen federal courts of appeals as well as the Supreme Court. Mr. Freeman has a particular interest in intellectual property law and he has represented the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Copyright Office in many high-profile appellate and Supreme Court matters.
Mr. Freeman joined the Department of Justice in 2004 through the Attorney General’s Honors Program after serving as a law clerk for the Hon. Sandra Lynch of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He lives with his wife and daughters in Arlington, Virginia.
