HLS Advocates for Human Rights is pleased to announce “An Ambassador Without A Country: the Kurdish Fight for Independence”, a discussion between Her Excellency, Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Kurdistan Regional Government Representative to the United States, and Rez Gardi (LL.M Class of 2019 and Kurdish lawyer).

Today, Iraq and Kurdistan are in the middle of a great contest of wills: the will of the Kurdish people expressed in their recent independence referendum, and the will of the Iraqi federal government to keep Kurdistan in Iraq. This conversation will cover the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region that has resulted in 1.5 million displaced Iraqis and Syrians being unable to return to their homes. In particular, the conversation will center on the resurgence of ISIS and the political developments in Baghdad and Erbil, specifically in the year since the region held a referendum on independence in September 2017, in which 93 percent of those in the Kurdish region voted for independence.
