John Mathews II JD’07
John is the Senior Justice Deputy for Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. In this role, he develops and advances Supervisor Mitchell’s vision for equity and criminal justice reform that will impact the County’s nearly 10 million residents. John joined the LA County Board of Supervisors from The Justice Collaborative, where he led criminal justice reform advocacy campaigns as Director of Community Engagement and Senior Legal Counsel.
John has extensive experience litigating civil and criminal cases in federal district and appellate courts. His legal experience includes working as a Litigation Associate at Latham & Watkins LLP, clerking for the Honorable Raymond Jackson in the Eastern District of Virginia, and serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in President Obama’s Department of Justice in Puerto Rico. After Hurricane Maria devastated the island, he coordinated hurricane relief efforts and provided food and supplies to community-based organizations.
John received a B.A. in Political Science from UCLA and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. While attending Harvard, he served as President of the Harvard Black Law Students Association and editor for the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review. He also serves as a member of Rotary Club of Long Beach, 100 Black Men of Long Beach, and the Long Beach Public Library Foundation Board. John has extensive experience in public speaking, mentoring students in Long Beach, and moderating educational forums.
