International Intellectual Property, Public Health, and Access to Medicines

Prerequisites: Faculty permission. Interested students should submit a one-paragraph statement of interest briefly describing their background and reason for wanting to take the course. This course examines fundamental principles of international IP law with an emphasis on access to medicines. It covers comparative approaches to the scope of patent protection, limitations and exceptions, and dispute settlement, including implications for public health and economic development in the Global South. Students will study key provisions of leading major treaties, emphasizing the implementation and enforcement of the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and IP chapters in regional trade agreements, including new forms of legal protection available to the pharmaceutical industry.
