Mike Atalla

Hometown: Staten Island, New York

Undergraduate major and school: Politics, University of Virginia (GO HOOS!!!)

Most embarrassing law school moment: Spending 30 minutes on my crim exam bringing charges against a person in the hypo who died. When I realized this, I was already short on time and wrote “JK ignore that analysis because he’s dead.”

Favorite movie: Good Will Hunting

Favorite day of the year: Tie between the first day of college basketball season so I can watch the Hoos and the first day pumpkin spice comes back to Starbucks.

A hobby I picked up over the last year and a half: Cycling! It was great during quarantine and I saw so many beautiful towns in other parts of Massachusetts that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

Mazelle Etessami

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Undergraduate major and school: Political Science, UC Berkeley

When I was a kid, I thought I’d grow up to be: A shamu trainer at SeaWorld (this was before Blackfish came out, don’t worry).

Most embarrassing law school moment: I fell dead asleep in Crim (in my defense, it was 6:30am in LA and I did class from a couch to not wake my sister up). I woke up to my Professor saying, “Mazelle, Joseph (the TF), you’re the only ones left!” Instead of responding in any rational way, I instantaneously slammed my laptop shut.

My favorite day of the year: The first sunny day after a long winter!!!

A hobby I picked up over the last year and a half: Roller blading! It is like a personal disco party :).

Nils Ivars

Hometown: Originally from Karlstad, Sweden (N.B. not the same as Switzerland!), nowadays living in Stockholm.

School/legal background: Uppsala University, Sweden. Master of Laws 2018. Practiced for three years after law school, first litigation/arbitration and later as a law clerk and junior judge.

Most embarrassing law school moment: In my Swedish law school, I took a course named EU Commercial Law & Litigation. My group had not realized that the first seminar was actually a very serious moot court. As such, my group of four people had to improvise a 20-minute legal pleading on EU Public Procurement Law (which is, frankly, not the most improvisable topic). We barely knew each other. We had not prepared for the seminar together. And — none of us were native English speakers (which did not make the improvisation easier). I still have PTSD.

A movie I would change the ending to: Forrest Gump. Seriously! He deserves to finally be with Jennie. Why does she have to die?

A hobby I picked up over the last year and a half: Watercolor painting.

Mohammed Jagana

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Undergraduate major and school: Government & Politics, St. John’s University

Favorite song: To Zion – Lauryn Hill

A book I would change the ending to: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, because why does it have to end? We need more books/movies.

What surprised me about law school: The variety of careers many of my classmates had prior to law school.

Favorite day of the year: My birthday of course! But seriously, probably the first day of fall. It marks the start of the best season of the year.

Maggie LaPoint

Hometown: Pflugerville, Texas (…just outside of Austin)

Undergraduate major and school: Business and Spanish, Arizona State University

Plans after law school: Moving to NYC to join Fish & Richardson’s copyright and trademark group.

Most embarrassing law school moment: I brought sparkling water into the Langdell Reading Room, and when I opened the lid it was like a geyser exploded. In complete silence, I cleaned the table and left. I looked like I’d been at a waterpark.

Favorite fact I learned in law school: A tomato is legally a vegetable.

A hobby I picked up over the last year and a half: Unsure if this is a “hobby,” but raising a dog! Her name is Olive, she’s the best.

Sophie Ludewigs

Hometown: Celle, Germany

Undergraduate major and school: Heidelberg University, Germany. I started law school right after high school, which is really common in Germany.

When I was a kid, I thought I’d grow up to be: I wanted to do many things, but most of all I wanted to be a tiger keeper (fortunately, I reconsidered).

Most embarrassing law school moment: Misspelling my high school’s name on my LL.M. application

Plans after law school: Finishing my PhD

Favorite book and movie: The School of Life by Alain de Botton and Legally Blonde (it’s a classic – don’t fight me on that one)

Aiyanna Sanders

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Undergraduate major and school: Political Science and African American Studies, Emory University

When I was a kid, I thought I’d grow up to be: A lawyer (yes I know, how boring?)

Most embarrassing law school moment: Turning in an incomplete closed memo LRW draft because I thought they meant a rough draft, not a draft of the whole brief.

Favorite book: As a teenager, I loved 13 Reasons Why and have yet to feel as strongly about another book since.

Favorite day of the year: Christmas, but my birthday is a close second!

What surprised me about law school: I didn’t expect to enjoy Civil Procedure as much as I did.
