The Class of 2022 will soon be arriving at HLS and we need your help mentoring 1Ls who are participating in our Public Service Leaders Program (formerly called “Section Reps”). Our hope is to pair interested students with alumni mentors who share similar career interests in public interest and/or public service and/or who have tackled similar concerns.

We know that you have much to share about your experience during law school and in the legal profession and hope that you will be willing to volunteer. We expect that the time commitment will be quite small. Please note that some alumni volunteers may not be matched this year if there is not a student with similar interests.

While we aspire to have all alumni volunteer, because of the wonderful growth in first generation students at HLS, we are specifically hoping to identify first-generation alumni willing to serve as mentors.

Please fill out the online registration form by September 23, 2019 to indicate that you would be willing to participate as an HLS alumni mentor.

Though we do not expect that your participation will be very time consuming, we have developed some basic guidelines for this year’s alumni mentorship program, as follows:

  1. While the burden will be on your student mentee to reach out to you, we hope that you can reply within a couple of days of their initial outreach. For some of the students, this will be their first attempt at “networking” and we want them to feel encouraged;
  2. Beyond the initial mentor-mentee outreach discussion, all mentors should have at least one check-in per academic term in 2019-2020 (i.e. fall, winter/J-term, spring) via email, phone, Skype or in-person. Check-ins may include discussing academic interests, summer internship searches, networking opportunities, public interest job resources, study habits, exam prep, making law school feel relevant, self-doubt and other relevant topics of mutual interest; and
  3. If in-person contact is possible (e.g., if you will be on campus for any reason or if your mentee is in your area at some point), we hope you will make an effort to connect.

Thank you for helping to mentor the new class of HLS grads! If you have any questions, please contact OPIA at or 617-495-3108.
