Crafting an Effective Resume and Cover Letter

A strong resume and cover letter are essential to making a good first impression with a potential summer employer and helping them start to get to know you. The following OPIA resources can help you perfect these documents and present your background and experiences in a way that employers will find compelling.

  • Our public interest [link_to id=46594 title=”Resumes”]resume guidelines and samples[/link_to] and [link_to id=47013 title=”Cover Letters”]cover letter guidelines and samples[/link_to] provide useful starting points for crafting your own documents.
  • Our [link_to id=174110 title=”Job Search FAQs”]Summer Public Interest Job Search FAQs[/link_to] answer many of the most common 1L resume and cover letter questions.
  • OCS’s Yih-hsien Shen and OPIA’s Catherine Pattanayak cover the fundamentals of effective writing in their [link_to id=17356 title=”Resume Workshop”]resume workshop[/link_to] and [link_to id=17352 title=”Cover Letter Workshop”]cover letter workshop[/link_to].
  • Take advantage of OPIA’s resume and cover letter review service. After you have reviewed the above resources and formatted your materials accordingly, complete our resume and cover letter review request form with your materials uploaded as Word documents, and we will return your materials to you in 10-14 business days with detailed mark-up and feedback. To ensure that we can respond to all students who request this service, we will review one resume and one cover letter per student per academic year.

OPIA often receives a high volume of resume and cover letter review requests after the Thanksgiving holiday. To ensure your materials will be reviewed and returned to you before December 1, please submit them to OPIA by November 5.
