Adding a Cross-Registered Course

  • Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility to Cross-Register

    • 2Ls and 3Ls must be registered for at least 8 HLS credits and the cross-registered course must convert to at least 2 HLS credits to meet the 10-credit minimum residency requirement.
    • The course may not conflict with any other courses you are enrolled in, and you may not arrange to arrive late or leave early from any courses and travel time between schools must be allowed.
    • You are not exceeding the cross-registration maximum of 12 credits.
    • You are not exceeding the term maximum of 16 credits.
    • JD students who want to cross-register at another school during winter term need prior approval from the Registrar’s Office (registrar@law.harvard.edu). Upon submitting their cross-registration petition, LLM students will need to be approved by their advisor in the Graduate Program.
    • Please note: Joint-Degree students are generally not permitted to cross-register. Please contact the Registrar’s Office (registrar@law.harvard.edu) for more information.

Deadline: Ongoing until petition filing deadline (see below)

    Contact: registrar@law.harvard.edu or 617-495-4612

  • Step 2: Choose Your Cross-Registered Course

Deadline: Ongoing until petition filing deadline (see below)

  • Step 3: Confirm That Course is Acceptable for Cross-Registration

    • All courses at Harvard, MIT and Fletcher qualify for cross-registration as long as they don’t significantly repeat course work previously done at any other school.
    • JD students who want to cross-register at another school during winter term need prior approval from the Registrar’s Office (registrar@law.harvard.edu). Upon submitting their cross-registration petition, LLM students will need to be approved by their advisor in the Graduate Program.

Deadline: Ongoing until petition filing deadline (see below)

  • Step 4: Submit Cross-Registration Petitions

    • Petition for Harvard courses in my.harvard.edu.
      • Find more information on petitioning in my.harvard here.
      • Please click here to see the mandatory steps to cross-register at HBS-MBA.
    • Petition for MIT courses in courses.harvard.edu.
    • Petition for Fletcher courses with the Non-Harvard Petition Form.
    • Depending on the school, your petition may need approval from the instructor and/or the host school Registrar’s Office. Once submitted, your petition(s) will be routed to the appropriate approvers automatically.
      • Note: Approval from the faculty member is not the same as being enrolled by the Registrar’s Office. Additionally, approval by the HLS Registrar’s Office within my.harvard is conditional upon compliance with all cross-registration policies.
    • For LLM students only: Upon submitting your cross-registration petition, all LLM students will need to be approved by his or her advisor in the Graduate Program. If approved by your advisor then the petition will move onto the faculty member and so on.
      • Please note, if you’re submitting a petition for a course at HKS, MIT, or Tufts, you will need to follow up with the Graduate Program for advisor approval outside of the online cross-registration system.

Deadline: Ongoing until petition filing deadline (see below)

  • Step 5: Enroll

    • For Harvard and MIT courses: Once all applicable approvals in my.harvard have been granted, you must return to my.harvard.edu to manually enroll yourself in the course(s) of your choosing. Once you enroll in my.harvard, the HLS Registrar’s Office will check your schedule for compliance with our cross-registration policies and add the course(s) to Helios.
      • Note: Adding courses to Helios is a manual process; please allow for processing time between your my.harvard enrollment and when the course appears in Helios.
      • If there is an issue with finalizing your enrollment in Helios, the HLS RO will be in touch with you directly.
    • Tufts courses will appear in Helios once the Tufts Registrar’s Office confirms your enrollment with the HLS Registrar’s Office.
  • Step 6: Comply With HLS Cross-Registration Calendar

    • HLS students must comply with the cross-registration enrollment period dates set forth by each school. If a student does not submit a cross-registration petition during the specific school’s enrollment window then they will not be enrolled in the course.
    • If a student intends to drop a cross-registered course then they should be adhering to the school with the earlier add/drop deadline to ensure that they are dropped without penalty.

Deadline: Check HLS Cross-Registration Calendar for deadlines.
